Taking a Moment for C-H-A-N-G-E

Our Guide to Bell Let’s Talk Day 2026

Every January, a vital national conversation takes centre stage in Canada. Bell Let's Talk Day has evolved into a powerful movement dedicated to transforming how our nation views and supports mental health. At Lynwood Charlton Centre, as the Lead Agency for child and youth mental health in Hamilton, we witness every day the profound impact that dedicated support and open dialogue can have on a young person's life. This year's theme, "Take a Moment for Mental Health," resonates deeply with our mission and our daily work.

The 2026 campaign encourages everyone to prioritize mental well-being by taking three types of moments:

  • Moments for you: To check in with and care for your own mental health.

  • Moments for others: To reach out and support the people around you.

  • Moments for society: To participate in collective actions—like flag raisings, school assemblies, and sharing stories—that recognize mental health's fundamental importance.

More importantly, it provides a tangible pathway to turn those moments into lasting impact through its C-H-A-N-G-E framework. This framework outlines the concrete steps that build a more supportive community.

Today, as a local leader in this field, we offer a guide for our community. We will explore the power of taking a moment and demonstrate how each action within C-H-A-N-G-E can be directed to create meaningful, local support for the children, youth, and families of Hamilton. Since 2010, this national movement has directed over $155 million to Canadian mental health initiatives. Together, we can channel this momentum into local action that strengthens our community's mental health foundation every day of the year.

Understanding the Call to Action: Moments of C-H-A-N-G-E

The "Take a Moment" theme and the C-H-A-N-G-E framework are two sides of the same coin: one is the intention, the other is the action. For a parent, taking a moment might mean noticing a change in their child’s behaviour. The C-H-A-N-G-E framework provides the next step—offering a clear path from that moment of awareness to meaningful support.

Here is how we connect this national call to action to our local work as your Lead Agency.

C: Choose to Learn

The campaign encourages learning about mental health organizations. We invite you to choose to learn about us. Discover how, as the Lead Agency, we coordinate care across Hamilton, provide specialized programs for youth, and advocate for system improvements. Your understanding of our local work turns awareness into informed support.

H: Help a Friend

"Helping a friend" starts with listening and can extend to sharing knowledge of local resources. When a young person is struggling, helping them can mean guiding them to our Access and System Navigation (ASN) service. We are the professional support network that friends and families can confidently connect to, ensuring the moment of helping leads to sustained care.

A: Ask About Supports

While national directories are valuable, local pathways are critical. We encourage everyone to ask us about the specific, free programs available in our community. From counselling and family therapy at our sites to specialized school-based programs, knowing where to ask locally is the key to accessing timely help.

N: Nurture Your Well-being

We champion this daily. Our clinical work focuses on helping youth build the skills for long-term well-being. Furthermore, we support parents and caregivers in nurturing their own mental health, recognizing that a supported caregiver is essential for a supported child. We provide resources and support for the whole family’s mental health journey.

G: Get Involved

You can get involved by downloading the Bell Let's Talk toolkit to start conversations. You can also get involved by supporting local mental health. Advocate for child and youth mental health funding, share information about our services in your networks, or participate in our community events. Change in Hamilton is built on local engagement.

E: Engage in Conversations

Ending stigma starts with a conversation. Use national guides to begin talking, and let those conversations deepen through local channels. We create spaces for dialogue through youth advisory panels and family feedback sessions, ensuring the conversations that start today lead to better services in our community tomorrow.

How to Take a Moment: A Practical Guide

So, what does this look like in practice? How can you, today, take a moment that leads to change? This theme is an invitation to integrate simple, powerful actions into our daily lives. Here’s what that can look like for different members of our Hamilton community:

For Parents & Caregivers:

  • A Moment for You: Pause to acknowledge the emotional weight of caregiving. Practice self-compassion.

  • A Moment for Your Child: Put down your phone, make eye contact, and ask, “How are you really feeling today?” Listen to understand, not to solve.

  • A Moment for Action: Familiarize yourself with the signs of mental health struggles and know how to reach out to our ASN team. Download the Bell Let’s Talk Conversation Guides as a helpful tool.

For Youth:

  • A Moment for You: Check in with yourself. A few minutes of deep breathing, a walk outside, or journaling can help regulate big emotions.

  • A Moment for a Friend: Send a text to a friend who seems withdrawn. A simple “I’m here for you” can make a world of difference.

  • A Moment for Your Community: Share a message of support online that directs peers to local resources like Lynwood Charlton Centre, using #BellLetsTalk.

For Educators, Coaches, and Community Leaders:

  • A Moment for You: Use resources from the Bell Let’s Talk toolkit. Then, take another moment to explore the well-being tips and caregiver support information on our website. Lasting self-care is built on both general strategies and specific local knowledge.

  • A Moment for Others: Complete the free "Be There" certificate from Jack.org. Then, bookmark our website and One Stop Talk. When a young person confides in you, you’ll be ready not just with a listening ear, but with a concrete, local resource to suggest.

  • A Moment for Systemic Support: Ensure your organization’s referral pathways to Lynwood Charlton Centre are clear and up-to-date.

Our Pledge: Turning Moments into Momentum
